Declarative Multi-paradigm Programming

This tutorial provides an overview and introduction to declarative programming exploiting multiple paradigms, in particular, functional, logic, and constraint programming. To demonstrate the possibility to support these paradigms within a single programming model, we survey the features of the declarative multi-paradigm language Curry.

Declarative Programming in Prolog

We try to assess to what extent declarative programming can be realized in Prolog and which aspects of correctness of Prolog programs can be dealt with by means of declarative interpretation. More specifically, we discuss termination of Prolog programs, partial correctness, absence of errors and the safe use of negation.

Declarative Aspect-Oriented Programming

Aspect-oriented programming addresses the problem that the implementation of some properties such as error handling and optimization tends to cross-cut the basic functionality. To overcome that problem special languages are used to specify such properties—the so-called aspects—in isolation. The software application is obtained by weaving the aspect code and the implementation of properties corr...

Declarative Synchronous Multithreaded Programming

We demonstrate how TransLucid can be used as a reactive system. At each instant, there is a set of active ports, where sets of equations, demands and threads are all registered. Each thread defines a sequence of (state, demand) pairs, and threads may interact through the overall set of equations. The entire system remains fully declarative.

Advancing declarative programming

This thesis attempts to unite and consolidate two large and often culturally disjoint programming paradigms: declarative (focusing on specifying what a program is supposed to do, e.g., shuffle an array so that its elements are ordered) and imperative (detailing how the program intention is to be implemented, e.g., by applying the QuickSort algorithm). The ultimate result of such an effort would...
